Celebrating World Diabetes Day on 14 November, Novo Nordisk Turkey synchronized many walks in Istanbul; the main walk took place in the central streets Istiklal. 20 schools participated in Istanbul with a total of 3,179 school children.
At the schools, invited doctors gave speeches about diabetes and its prevention through a healthy life style. After the speeches, participating students from all the schools walked in their schoolyards at exactly the same time.
Rain did not discourage participation
At noon, and in spite of the rain, people kept rushing into the starting point in the centre of Istanbul to register and get their special numbered overcoat together with a cap.
Many officials joined in the walk, including representatives of the Child and Adolescent Association.
At 14:50 local time, the participants arrived to the finishing line and gathered to listen to Professor Nazif Bagriaçik, President of the Turkish Diabetes Society, Professor Temel Yilmaz, President of Turkish Diabetes Foundation, and many others, who gave speeches about the aim of the walk and diabetes prevention. Novo Nordisk organisers and participants were thanked for their support on this diabetes day.
Turkey ended the walk with a concert, where everyone enjoyed watching the famous dancer Ahmet Dündar perform a tango show with his partner and listening to the famous band Sefarad singing their favourite songs.
The Turkish diabetes walk’s final counting added up to 4,652 - which was almost four times more than the previous year - and received immediate press coverage.
