Being Coach

In this activity the children plan and conduct a PE lesson. They must consider energy burning, muscle building, fitness and group dynamics.

Teaching the activity
The activity is suitable for large groups of children such as a school class.

The class is divided into groups, each of which plans a PE lesson for the rest of the class.
The activity can be carried out indoors or outdoors. However, the children need to be able to sit down and plan the lesson.

See how the activity works in the step-by-step guide (PDF). The activity is primarily aimed at older children.

Duration of the activity: 2 hours of preparation for 1 hour of PE.

Other activity suggestions
The activity can be combined with other activities such as Body Facts.

Materials

  • ‘Guide for children – Being Coach’
  • ‘Five elements – what a PE lesson can include’
  • Balls, skipping ropes, mats and other sports equipment

Educational goals
The aim of the activity is to make the children aware of the importance of being physically active.

In particular, the activity teaches the children about exercise in relation to energy burning, muscle building and fitness.
The activity also gives the children skills in working together to plan and organise a PE lesson and makes them aware of the link between exercise and health.
